Project Overview: Horticultural Lighting for Tomato Cultivation – The Netherlands

This project involved the implementation of a high-efficiency horticultural lighting system tailored for a large-scale tomato farm in the Netherlands. The primary objective was to extend the growing season, improve crop yields, and maintain consistent fruit quality regardless of external weather conditions.

Lighting Design Approach:

  • Fixture Type: Full-spectrum LED grow lights (mainly deep red 660 nm and blue 450 nm) were selected to optimize photosynthetic activity (PAR range).

  • Mounting Configuration: Top-lighting with uniform grid spacing to ensure consistent canopy coverage across greenhouse rows.

  • Light Intensity: PPFD levels calibrated between 180–250 µmol/m²/s depending on crop stage and variety.

  • Dimming & Controls: Smart lighting control systems with sensors adjust DLI (Daily Light Integral) based on real-time natural light availability.

  • Photoperiod Management: Customizable lighting schedules ensure ideal day lengths for vegetative and fruiting phases.

  • Energy Efficiency: High-efficiency LED drivers and thermal management systems reduce energy consumption by 40% compared to HPS alternatives.

Outcomes:
The project achieved increased tomato yield per square meter, enhanced fruit uniformity, and reduced energy usage. Moreover, the stable climate created by the lighting system allowed for year-round production, supporting the farm’s commitment to sustainable agriculture.
